August 2012 – Healthy Drinks for a Happy Summer

Hi All,

August is here and for many this marks the last month of summer but there is still plenty of time to make this YOUR BEST SUMMER EVER!

Over the last few months I have shared with you many tips on easy and effective ways to get more good quality vegetables and fruits into your diet (click on these links for more information on how to pick the best vegetables and juicing vegetables).  This month I wanted to share with you the BEST and the WORST drinks for your health as well as some incredible healthy drink recipes that could SAVE YOUR LIFE!

What Should You Be Drinking?

Each year I am invited into the schools to talk to the kids on topics including: Anatomy, Dring WaterThe Nerve System, How to keep their bodies healthy naturally, Backpack Safety and Stress Management – just to name a few.  The classes range from very young to seniors in high school and at some point in the talk, I always ask them “What should you be drinking?”  Besides the occasional wise guy, they always have the right answer – WATER!

I then ask them “How much water should you drink each day?”

Many will give the stock answer of (8) eight ounce glasses per day.

Could this be right for everyone?  NO!

An easy Rule of Thumb to remember is:

Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water per day

    • i.e. 100 lb person should drink 50 oz of water per day

Note:

You may need to up this amount to 2/3 or 3/4 of your body weight if:

  • You are very active
  • You are sick or have a chronic illness
  • Take prescription or over the counter medications daily
  • Drink caffeinated beverages

What Drinks Should You Avoid?

We are surrounded by a litany of tasty beverages, one more intriguing than the next.  TheSoda will make you sick extensive marketing efforts make these drinks seem healthy, delicious and a must have BUT are they really “All That?”

Many if not most of these drinks are TOXIC from the artificial sweeteners, colors and additives that are used to create those crazy colors, unique flavors and to allow them to sit on the shelf for years but still taste as fresh as they day they were made.

Artificial Sweeteners

  • Are associated with 92 different neurological side effects ranging from mild headaches to birth defects, MS,  Alzheimer’s & Cancer.
  • Are associated with WEIGHT GAIN – recent research confirms that artificial sweeteners “confuse the calorie count in the brain” leading to increased food intake and weight gain.

 Artificial Colors and Additives

  • Have been associated with behavior issues such as temper tantrums, poor concentration, hyperactivity and allergic reactions.

Drinks to Avoid

  1. Soda – diet and regular and cola’s deplete your bone density
  2. Sports Drinks – contain artificial sweeteners & those neon colors just aren’t natural (see our June 2012 Newsletter for more details)
  3. Energy Drinks – can be very dangerous (see our June 2012 Newsletter for more details)
  4. “Frapa-Maka-Mookachinos” – Avoid all these CRAZY “coffee” drinks, they are mostly sugar or artificial sweeteners and additives
  5. Excessive Caffeine – there are good antioxidants in coffee and tea but too much caffeine will dehydrate you and can lead to bad headaches amongst other issues.

NOTE:   This is a partial list and does not cover all the drinks that are bad for you
