June 2012 – Summertime Health Tips

Hi All,

Summertime has so many wonderful opportunities to enhance your health, refresh you outlook and revitalize your spirit and here are a few useful tips to help you get the most out of your summer.

Stay HydratedDring Water

Being out in the sun and being active brings with it the need to DRINK MORE WATER!  Most of us do not drink enough water.  Instead we drink unhealthy beverages and those that dehydrate us even more.  A good Rule of Thumb for water intake is:

Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water per day

  • i.e. 100 lb person should drink 50 oz of water per day

Note:

1. You may need to up this amount to 2/3 or 3/4 of your body weight if:

  • You are very active
  • You are sick or have a chronic illness
  • Take prescription or over the counter medications daily
  • Drink caffeinated beverages

2. Soda will KILL YOU

  • Diet soda has 92 different neurological side effects (including headaches)
  • Regular soda with sugar is a major contributor to obesity
  • Colas will deplete your bone density leading to OSTEOPEROSIS
  • The caffeine in soda will dehydrate you

3. Energy Drinks are NOT GOOD FOR YOU, can be very dangerous, can potentially lead to illness or even death.  They are even more dangerous for children.

4. Colorful Sports Drinks are loaded with nasty chemicals and should not be consumed.  The need to replenish electrolytes after exercise is not  necessary for most.  You would need to exercise for over 45 minutes at a High Intensity to require electrolyte replenishment.  Even at this point, most of these commercial drinks offer more negatives than positives.  DRINK WATER.

SunscreenSunlight and Vitamin D

Summer is a great time to get outside, enjoy the beauty of nature and build-up your natural reserves of Vitamin D.  Exposure to the sun helps your body in so many ways including providing what is needed so your body can produce Vitamin D.

When you cover your body in sunscreen, you block the necessary sun rays your body needs to produce Vitamin D and hence eliminate some of the wonderful benefits of the sun.  So many people have been scared into thinking that sun exposure is bad and will lead to skin cancer.  When done in moderation, sun exposure is extremely beneficial and not harmful.

Things to Remember

1. Do not let your skin burn – the benefits of sun exposure end when you have reached the point of sunburn.  10-20 minutes of sun exposure a day is a wonderful way to enhance your health.  (This is a “rule of thumb” – those who are more fair skinned may need less and those with darker skin may need more).  Download this FREE guide to safe sun exposure prepared by one of the worlds greatest authorities on natural health Mercola’s Guide to Sun Exposure.

2. Sunscreen lotions can not only block the beneficial rays of the sun but can be TOXIC to your body.  Follow these link to the EWG 2012 Sunscreen Guides:

How your sunscreen ranks EWG’s database. (Hint: Leading brands like Hawaiian Tropic and Banana Boat didn’t make the cut.)

NOTE: Most of us still need to use a high quality Vitamin D supplement even during the summertime to maintain healthy levels of Vitamin D.  Contact Dr. Stern for your FREE Vitamin D Consultation.

How to Pick the Healthiest Vegetables & Fruits

Summer brings with it a wonderful selection of fresh vegetables and fruits found both in theChoosing the best vegetables grocery stores and farmers markets.  Should you choose Organic?  Locally Grown?  Is the produce at the farmers market the best?

  • Organic produce offers the benefits of being pesticide-free and having higher concentrations of minerals.
  • Locally Grown produce offers the promise of being fresher (because it is not shipped far) and you are supporting local farmers.
  • Store bought produce, if you follow the sales, many times can be cheaper.

Tips to Picking the Best Produce

1. Green Leafy Vegetables – no matter if it is organic or locally grown, if the greens aren’t deep green and crisp, the produce may not be as fresh as you think or maybe it was stored/shipped improperly.

2. Vegetables of color (i.e. red, yellow & orange peppers) should be bright and colorful, should be firm (watch out for soft spots) and should not have any foul odors.

3. Limp is Bad – if the carrots and celery aren’t crisp, keep on walking.  Make sure you are getting fresh, crisp vegetables.  They will definitely last longer.

NOTE: If you are not buying organic, make sure to download and use this GREAT Fruit and Vegetable Wash to easily remove the Toxic chemicals that were sprayed onto your produce.
