April 2011 – The April Fool’s of Health and Healthcare

Hi All,Don't hide your head in the sand when it comes to your health

Summer is here!  APRIL FOOLS!

Summer is not here but Spring is so how are you going to “Spring” your family toward a year of better health and a higher quality of life?

Let’s look at the “April Fools” of health and healthcare:

babies don't need drugsWe have been programmed to think that we need a pill, potion or lotion to alleviate our symptoms and let us go on with our lives.  Is that true?  Is that how you and your family want to live?  If the symptom is gone, does that mean the problem gone as well?

Your body has the natural ability to heal and regulate itself and you have the capacity to be healthier in 5 years then you are now.

Would you be interested to learn how you could reverse the affects of the ageing process?

Your nerve system controls and coordinates the function of every cell in your body.  The same way that sugar causes decay in your teeth, STRESS causes decay in your nerve system and leads to an accelerated aging process.

The first thing we must do is recognize where our stress is coming from.

Stress comes in 3 main forms:

  1. Chemical Stress: Primarily from what we eat, drink, breathe and the drugs we put into our bodies (prescription, over the counter & others).
  2. Physical Stress: Accidents, injuries, falls, traumas but more frequently from Sedentary Lifestyle and Poor Posture.
  3. Mental/Emotional Stress: Stressors at home, work, school, relationships with family, friends & others …

Once we have found the sources of our stress, we can take action toward addressing the stressors.  If you just address the symptoms it is like turning off the fire alarm before the fire is out, the annoying symptom is gone but the problem remains only to come back another day but worse.

What Can We Do to Address the Stress?

  1. Make better food choices – we all know what we should eat (vegetables, fruit, whole grains and maybe lean meats and fish), but what are you really eating?  Fast “food”, Junk “food”, refined and processed carbohydrates, white sugar, white flour … all of these cause Inflammation and Stress in our body.  Eat Health and Stay Young!
  2. Drink Water – figure about ½ your body weight in ounces of water per day (i.e. a 150 lb person should drink at least 75 oz water per day).  Caffeine dehydrates your body, Soda is TOXIC (diet soda has over 92 different neurological side effects) and Energy drinks can literally KILL you!  Stick with water.
  3. Be Active – more than accidents or injuries, sedentary lifestyle and poor posture
is a constant stress on our bodies.  We spend more time sitting, staring at computers, watching TV … Take advantage of the good weather and get out and be active.   When you are sitting, make sure to take regular breaks and maintain good posture.
  4. You can get up from a junk food meal and reduce your chemical stress.  You can straighten-up your posture and be active and reduce your physical stress.
What happens when you have a problem at home, work, school … does it go
away when you get up and walk away.  NO!  Make sure to have some Stress Management Tools that work for you and use them (i.e. meditate, deep breathing, talk it out).

Finally, your Nerve System is the system that integrates all the input from the outside
and inside (stress & good habits) and tells your body what to do.  When your Nerve System is poorly maintained and decayed (subluxated), it does not have the capacity to properly use all your positive efforts and you may only get a 5% utilization of your healthy lifestyle efforts.  But, when you go to the chiropractor for regular check-ups, you will maximize the health of your nerve system, the health of your body and now you may get a 90-95% utilization of your healthy lifestyle efforts, be healthier & have a Greater Quality of
Life.

Regular chiropractic wellness care provides you with a HUGE BANG for YOUR Healthcare
BUCK!

Baseball, Soccer, Running and More:

Tis the season to see injuries.  As outdoor sports begin again Boys Playing Baseballboth kids and adults need to start the season off on the right foot.  There are some very easy things you can do to avoid injury and improve your performance:

  1. If you have taken the winter off, work your way back into the exercising scene slowly.  Get in shape before you attempt to compete at your highest level.
  2. Warm-up, Stretch, Play then STRETCH AGAIN.  Always make sure to warm-up until you break a light sweat and then stretch before you start your exercise and then stretch again when you are done.  I can’t tell you how many adults AND KIDS I see in my office after “pulling something” because they did not warm-up &
    stretch properly.
  3. Stay well hydrated – you do NOT need the electrolyte replacement drinks unless you are going “full throttle for at least 45 min non-stop.   WATER is the BEST.  If you are exercising intensely you may need upwards of ¾ your body weight in ounces of water per day.
  4. Have your Head in the Game – Be Present.  Injuries tend to happen when we lose focus or get fatigued.  Pay attention to your body and what is going on around  you.  Take a break if you need to.
  5. Have good quality, well maintained equipment

Finally, your nerve system controls EVERYTHING you do.  If you want to reduce your chance of injury, have better reaction time and PERFORM at your BEST, see your chiropractor for regular Nerve System Check-ups!
