Topic of the Month : THE NERVOUS SYSTEM – PART IV

Review of Parts I – III

Over the last six months, we have learned that the nervous system controls all that you do, say, feel and think. We have seen that the Central Nervous System is the main control center and the primary information highway of the nervous system. The Peripheral Nervous System serves as feeder streets / communication pathways from the primary information highway to the musculoskeletal (bone, muscle, ligament and tendon) elements of the body. In this issue, we will see how the Autonomic Nervous System provides for communication with the visceral (organ and glands) elements of the body.

Autonomic Nervous System

This aspect of the nervous system controls the viscera (organs) and glands. The two primary components of ANS are the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is associated with the “Fight or Flight” response and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is associated with the “Rest and Digest” response. The SNS speeds things up such as increasing your heart rate, respiratory rate and secretion of adrenalin. The PNS slows things down such as decreasing heart rate and respiratory rate while allowing the body to perform other functions such as digestion.

The ANS controls things such as sight, smell, taste, hearing, blood pressure, breathing, constriction and dilation of blood vessels, digestion, bowel and bladder function, sexual organ function and much more.

After recognizing many of the different functions of the ANS it becomes very apparent that this system is vital to all aspect of our lives and affects every thing we do.

How Can Chiropractic Help with ANS Dysfunction?

Imagine you have x-ray vision and you can see the organs of your body. The heart and lungs in your chest, your stomach and pancreas in the region just below, your intestines throughout your abdominal area and so on … The nerve supply to all of these organs runs from the spine outward to the organs at about the level they rest at in the body. This means that subluxations (restrictions in spinal joint function that inhibit proper nervous system information flow) at an associated spinal level can affect the nervous information flow to and from organs and glands entering and leaving the spinal cord at that level. In turn, organ and gland dysfunction or disease can cause subluxation at the associated spinal level. Chiropractors find subluxations and eliminate them and thereby restoring proper ANS (as well as PNS & CNS) functions.

Your chiropractor can usually tell, by palpating (touching) the spine, when someone is having digestive problems, asthma, allergies, etc … It shows up in their spine as subluxations.

What Can I Do To Improve the Function of My ANS?

1. CHIROPRACTIC CARE – regular chiropractic care eliminates subluxations that impair proper nervous system function. In addition, chiropractic care helps to stimulate elements of the nervous system that enhance many of the body’s functions. Chiropractic maintenance care for your nervous system is vital to the health of your nervous system.

2. Proper Nutrition – well- balanced diets rich in fruits and vegetables provide much needed vitamins and minerals to the body, but today’s foods do not provide us with as much nutrition as they once did. Therefore, supplementation with a high quality multi-vitamin, extra anti-oxidants and Omega 3 Fatty Acids are vital.

3. Exercise – regular exercise provides input to the nervous system. If you don’t use it, you will lose it.

In summary, all the elements of your nervous system are vital to your body’s ability to function from one moment to the next. It only makes sense that something so vital to your survival should be maintained and kept functioning at its highest level. Chiropractic is the only health care approach that maintains the health of your nervous system. Similar to having your teeth checked or getting a lube and oil for your car, Everybody should have their nervous system checked and maintained by a chiropractor.
