Topic of the Month : THE NERVOUS SYSTEM – PART I

Picture yourself walking barefoot in the house, you turn your head to see something and you slam your big toe right into the leg of a chair. What do you feel? Now picture yourself on that rare day when you awaken (without an alarm) and just lay there all warm and comfortable and not having to get up. How does this make you feel? These sensations that you feel, the awful sensation of Pain, the warm fuzzy feeling of being so comfortable, as well as every other sensation and feeling you feel, and all the things your body does are all controlled by your nervous system.

This is the first in a series of newsletters that will discuss the components, function and importance of your nervous system. This newsletter will be an overview of the elements of the nervous system and some general concepts related to the importance of your nervous system and what it does for you on a daily basis.

In general, your body, like everything else in the world around you, relies upon communication to operate. If the communication channels are open and information is flowing freely, everything operates well and problems are avoided. If the communication network breaks down, and the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing, all types of problems arise. In business, this could mean poor communication internally between different divisions, poor communication externally with customers and/or suppliers and much more. If this lasts too long, the company can’t produce and deliver the products nor services it is selling and “Hello Chapter 11.” It is not much different for your body. When the body is subluxation free (no spinal joint restrictions interfering with nerve flow), information flows freely and all the elements of your body function at their highest capacity. When subluxations exist and information is not being passed properly through the nervous system, communication breaks down – both internally and externally. Internal communications such as “Make more digestive enzymes, there is food coming” and “Kick-up that body temperature there is a fungus among us,” get slowed down or interfered with. External communications, such as, “Move your hand dummy, it’s sitting on a hot stove,” or “Put that foot in front of you before you take that next step” may get blocked.

Just understanding that the nervous system controls things such as the beating of your heart, breathing, vision and the movements involved in every step you take, helps you to start to understand how vital it is to keep this system functioning at its highest possible level.

All the elements of the nervous system work together in your body every second of the day creating the complex and vital communication system that runs your body and controls everything you do. Chiropractic treats the nervous system, hence, deals with a great deal more than back and neck pain. All of the elements of the nervous system come together at the Central Nervous System (the spine and brain) therefore, by removing subluxations, chiropractors actually deal with many aspects of your health by treating the source of the problem – the nervous system. By restoring proper nervous system communication flow and providing proper stimulus to the nervous system, chiropractic care facilitates improved function of things such as the respiratory system, the digestive system and the genito-urinary system (women’s issues, men’s issues, constipation …). Now you can clearly see how interference in the communication flow of your nervous system can affect your health at many different levels and how chiropractic can help!
